Nyva Pereyaslavschyny Shares Best Practices in Energy Efficiency
(08/04/09)

Nyva Pereyaslavschyny LLC, a Kyiv oblast-based agro company focused on crops production, is implementing a highly profitable renewable energy project that eliminates natural gas consumption for heating in favor of using straw for fuel, according to the Ukrainian Energy Efficiency Program (UKEEP). The UKEEP, a credit facility developed by the EBRD to help Ukrainian private companies in all sectors invest in energy efficiency or renewable energy projects, is supporting Nyva Pereyaslavschyny's replacement of gas boilers with straw boilers to fully satisfy the heating needs of the company's pig farms. Nyva Pereyaslavschyny recognized that the waste product, straw, from its crop production could be used as fuel. So instead of buying increasingly expensive natural gas, it was able to use the bi-product of its own production to generate heat. The project will strengthen the company's competitive position and also lead to large reductions of the company's CO2 output. An initial investment of USD 900 thsd will lead to an annual savings of at least USD 300 thsd. Not only is the project profitable, but it also makes the company independent of external gas suppliers, securing a sustainable and reliable supply of inexpensive energy.
